2017 Conference

The Australian Fulbright Alumni Association (AFAA) proudly hosted its inaugural conference at the Woodward Conference Centre in Melbourne, uniting Fulbright alumni, thought leaders, and distinguished speakers to explore the theme “Leadership in a New Era.” Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing global landscape, the conference examined how leadership can strengthen economic prosperity, cultural vibrancy, environmental responsibility, and social justice.

We were honoured to welcome Professor the Hon Bob Carr as our keynote speaker, whose insights on global and national leadership set the tone for two days of rich discussion. A highlight was the panel discussion featuring Fulbright alumni leaders Professor Charles Sampford, Melanie Poole, Dr Vanessa Adams, and Professor Ted Lefroy. Each panelist shared their perspectives on the most pressing leadership gaps today and offered innovative solutions, reflecting the depth, diversity, and impact of the Fulbright community.

The conference emphasized the role of Fulbright alumni in fostering leadership across sectors—from law, ethics, and governance, to public policy, conservation, agriculture, and international development. Attendees engaged in stimulating debate, exchanged ideas, and built connections to support leadership development in their own communities and professions.

The inaugural AFAA conference marked a milestone in our mission to empower alumni to lead, inspire, and influence change, while showcasing the enduring impact of Fulbright scholars on Australia and the world. It also highlighted the association’s commitment to creating platforms where knowledge, collaboration, and innovative thinking can flourish.
