SUMMARY:Victoria New Fulbright Scholar Welcome
LOCATION:Leather Room\, University House\, Professors’ Walk\, University of Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:https://fulbrightalumni.org.au/event-2841561\n\nCome join the Victorian Chapter welcome the new Fulbright Scholars with an engaging talk by Fulbright Alumnus Melanie Poole and a social dinner after. \n\n Race\, Justice and the Victorian Election: why ‘law and order’ rhetoric harms lives\, and how we can change the story this year\n We are heading into a racist "law and order" election in Victoria - and likely Federally soon after. Once again\, racist dog whistling is paving the way for policies that harm lives and target people who are experiencing disadvantage and vulnerability\, especially Indigenous people and other CALD communities. In this discussion we'll talk about some of the policies being proposed by both major parties\, why community lawyers and advocates are worried about them\, and the positive alternatives that we could pursue instead. We'll also do some creative brainstorming around political and messaging strategy and tactics in the Victorian election context.\n This event will follow on from the AFAA AGM. Attendees are welcome to attend both.\n Nibbles will be provided during the event and we will adjourn to the bistro for dinner at 7:30pm (dinner will be provided to all new scholars\, all others individual bills). The event is kindly sponsored by an Australian American Commission Fulbright Alumni Engagement Program (FAEP) Grant. \n\n The Leather Room is an intimate space - to help us manager numbers and catering of nibbles please RSVP to Elizabeth Brooke by email: ebrooke425@gmail.com.\n\n
